9 Tricks to Get the Most Out of the Intrinio API

The Intrinio API is our primary access method for financial data, and while we think it’s pretty great, we’re always looking for ways to make it better and more useful. Here are nine tools, tips, and tricks to getting the most value out of our API.

Software Development Kits

The Intrinio SDKs, created for developers, wrap all API v2 endpoints into an easy-to-use set of classes, methods, and response objects. Currently, we offer SDKs for:

API Endpoint Explorer

We offer a lot of data points. Like…a lot. To help you get exactly the data you need, we offer the API Endpoint Explorer. Browse or search all of our available endpoints and get the precise syntax to make your desired API call. The API Endpoint Explorer works with our Sandbox data, but you can choose Switch to Live Data to run calls for any data included in your subscriptions. This article explains in more depth how to use the Endpoint Explorer for our API, Excel add-in, and CSV downloads.

Collaborators

You can add as many collaborators to your account as you’d like – they just need to make an account. Once they’ve signed up, you can add them to your account. It looks like this from your account page:

Adding collaborators

Once you add the email they signed up with, they will see a specific set of collaborator access keys on their own account page that they can use, and their usage will be counted against your subscription. This allows a single paid subscription to be used with any number of developers, analysts, or employees.

Chrome Extension

Requestly’s Chrome extension saves your API key in your browser so you don’t have to reenter it every time you want to make an API call. Get step-by-step instructions here.

Developer Sandbox

A sandbox is a testing environment that isolates data from the production environment. Intrinio offers a developer sandbox environment that includes hundreds of datasets. Once you create an account, you’ll automatically get sandbox API access.

The sandbox has a large variety of free data which you can use for developing, testing, and experimenting. Keep in mind, since it is a limited environment, you’ll be able to access limited data only. For example, if you’re accessing US Fundamentals and Stock Prices, you’ll be limited to DOW 30 securities. You can see a complete list of what’s included in the sandbox here.

Usage & Limits

Track your API usage from your account page. You can toggle between sandbox and production environments to see usage for each. If you test a feed in the sandbox environment and decide to purchase it, visit the Usage page to find it – there will be a link directly to the product page for that feed. Your account page also lists your API request limits, as well as the limits for each feed you’re subscribed to.

Ticketing System

The support section of your account gives you the option to submit a ticket. Tickets are ideal if you’re experiencing a technical problem with your account or if you notice a data quality issue. Just make sure to read the FAQs first to see if your question has already been answered.

Bulk Downloads

All annual plans now come with a bulk download of the corresponding data. If you’re searching for historical data for backtesting purposes, using a bulk CSV file is vastly easier than running the API on a loop to get all the history you need.

User Community

If you’re an advanced developer, our user community is a perfect place to ask questions, share ideas, and get more out of our API.
