Developer Spotlight #1: WakeBotApp [blog series]

Our mission at Intrinio is to power a generation of applications that will fundamentally change the way our broken financial system works. Intrinio data feeds form the basis of large enterprise business reporting applications, Fintech web-apps, simple mobile apps and even blogs. It’s rewarding to see our product come to life at the hands of today’s most innovative developers building powerful things.

We’re lucky to be in a business where we grow together with our customers, and we’re proud to show off their hard work. Each blog in this series will feature a developer or a startup that has leveraged our financial data feeds to build something incredible.

These are their stories.

Scott Geye has been in the software industry for over 15 years. You could say that he definitely knows his stuff. We feel for him at Intrinio, because we share a distaste for the corporate world, preferring the agility, excitement and innovation of working on smaller teams with bigger dreams. Scott has worked at several startups putting his computer science degree to work.

What is WakeBot App?

WakeBot is the first robotic wakeup service giving you a personalized briefing of everything that is going on during your day and happening around the world. Set your usual wakeup time and start your day by having WakeBot read you a set of custom and engaging information.

Based on your phone’s location, WakeBot reads the current temperature, weather conditions and forecast. WakeBot is able to read your phone’s calendar and let you know about your upcoming and all-day events. Let WakeBot know what stocks you follow and it will find out the current prices. WakeBot summarizes all the top stories each day from your favorite news source.

Incredibly, Scott has built this app solo with just a little feedback from friends and family.

What was your inspiration for WakeBot App?

“I’ve always had trouble getting up in the morning, so I’ve been looking for a better alarm clock for a long time, ” said Scott.  “I tried several different apps, but nothing really kept me from hitting snooze over and over again. What I really wanted was something to get my brain in gear that would give me all the information I usually try to find after I wake up.”

This is why we like Scott- he solves his own problems. Intrinio also started as a direct result of solving a problem we had ourselves. For us, it was affordable financial data – for Scott, it was the push he needed in the morning to get going.

What was a challenge you faced in the development of your app?

Vocalizing stock prices is no easy task. At first, implementing real-time stock prices from Intrinio’s API would read $142.51 like this: “one hundred and forty two fifty one”. That’s no way to wake up in the morning! Too confusing. After adding dollars and cents Scott curated the system to be more human-like, reading the price: “one hundred forty two dollars and fifty one cents”. Problem solved.

At Intrinio, we’re proud to have Scott and WakeBot App as part of our ecosystem. Our founders are developers too – and we sympathize with the challenges inherent in building something from scratch, deploying a new innovation, and going after a dream. Scott spent a few weeks searching online for an API affordable enough for his app, and we’re so glad he found us.

Our mission at Intrinio is to provide developers just like Scott with the resources they need to build great things. Easy access to data is a very powerful thing, and each day we are blown away with tenacious developers who get their hands on it and produce apps like WakeBot. It’s an honor to power the next generation of Fintech applications, and we’re so happy to be growing alongside these movers, shakers and doers.

“I was blown away with the wealth of data that was available even though I only needed simple stock quotes. The best part was a pricing model that wasn’t ridiculous and allowed an independent developer to get started at no cost,” said Scott.

So what’s next for Scott?

WakeBot was a passion project that turned into a really useful tool Scott uses himself to wake up each day. Check it out! He’s in the process of building out more features, so if you have any suggestions feel free to reach out to him.
