Our mission at Intrinio is to power a generation of applications that will fundamentally change the way our broken financial system works. Intrinio data feeds form the basis of large enterprise business reporting applications, Fintech web-apps, simple mobile apps and even blogs. It’s rewarding to see our product come to life at the hands of today’s most innovative developers building powerful things.
We’re lucky to be in a business where we grow together with our customers, and we’re proud to show off their hard work. Each blog in this series will feature a developer or a startup that has leveraged our financial data feeds to build something incredible.
These are their stories.
The TraderSquare team is both gifted and unique – and that’s putting it lightly. When you get a data scientist, a finance pro turned coder, a gamer/coder and a strategic poker player in one room – cool things are bound to happen.
Angelina May went through a similar process that we did at Intrinio when we decided to take the plunge and start building our solution.
“I realized after working in the industry for a while that my career path didn’t align well with my goals, and the work I was doing was not meaningful and rewarding to me,” said Angelina.
What is TraderSquare?
When it comes to investment strategies for the everyday user, it can quickly become very cumbersome to cut through the noise. Often, you need an investment advisor with years of experience, who will end up taking a hefty cut of your investment. For those more financially savvy, very complicated, custom excel spread- sheets become the norm to assess information based on real-time data.
TraderSquare simplifies certain aspects of that process. TraderSquare gives the user the functionality to filter stocks based on their own preferences, and order stocks based on different financial criteria, all without even logging in.
Currently, these two services are limited to stocks in the S&P 500, but users can also find current financial data for any stock provided by the Intrinio API and store that information in their TraderSquare account.
Search Stocks. Explore by Metric. Pick Stocks.
What was your inspiration for TraderSquare?
“The inspiration for our app came from the realization that stock picking and analyses have a rather high barrier or entry, and we want to make it easier for anyone, with any background, to easily figure out whether a stock is compatible with their investment objectives,” said Angelina.
This is a team of problem solvers. We like that. They saw a gap in the market, and with the power of a comprehensive financial data API they were able to materialize their ideas into an awesome application.
What was a challenge you faced in the development of your app?
Providing a meaningful app for consumers requires a heck of a lot of data. The biggest challenge the TraderSquare team faced was the fact that their platform digests 1/4 million data points from Intrinio to compare stocks within the S&P 500. Harnessing and integrating all of that data proved to be a challenge – but was well worth it.
We get really excited about teams like this, because our founders are developers too – and we sympathize with challenges like this that are inevitable when you’re building something great.
The best part of our business at Intrinio is that there are real people behind these applications that we’re powering, and we get to watch them grow and watch their dreams come to life. The team is active when they tear themselves away from their work. Akul scuba dives. Chris owns the poker table. Cindy horseback rides.
“Intrinio seemed to be the most comprehensive of several data services we were eyeing,” said Akul, “We’re extremely grateful the service exists – it allowed us to meet our goals.”
So what’s next for the TraderSquare team?
You haven’t seen the last of TraderSquare yet. The current version of their app is just the beginning, and they’re continuing to invest in the platform and build out new features. Stay tuned!
