Our mission at Intrinio is to make financial data affordable and accessible so we can power a generation of applications that will fundamentally change the way our broken financial system works. Intrinio data feeds form the basis of large enterprise business reporting applications, fintech web-apps, simple mobile apps, and even blogs. It’s rewarding to see our product come to life in the hands of today’s most innovative developers as they build powerful tools.
We’re lucky to be in a business where we grow together with our customers, and we’re proud to show off their hard work. Each blog in this series will feature a developer or a startup that has leveraged our financial data feeds to build something incredible.
These are their stories.
Ronald Steinhoff started designing websites with a friend in high school. Back then, they were building the designs on a notepad. Props Ronald. He didn’t become as skilled of a programmer as his friend, but that didn’t stop him from building a powerful investment website called tickrz.
“Fortunately data providers like Intrinio make it possible for people like me to make web sites and web applications.”
Ronald had taken his technology skills to business school and then on to the professional money management world, all the while observing a tremendous change in the industry. These forces collided, and tickrz was born.
What is tickrz?
In an age where investment information comes at you like a fire-hose, tickrz makes things simple. Tickrz takes a bare-bones approach, stripping out all of that noise for their users so they can focus on what really matters. As referenced on the tickrz website, academic research has shown that there are only a few investment factors that really work: value, momentum, yield and quality.
Tickrz doesn’t make recommendations or provide advice, but it does give you a systematic and disciplined guide for better decision making on your own – for free. Well, not quite on your own.
You have the friendly face of tickrzbot to walk you through the process. Behind the scenes, tickrzbot is parsing data, calculating ranks, and translating that into English – so you can understand.
Both the novice and advanced investor can take advantage of the two main features:
One thing is for certain – tickrzbot doesn’t sugar coat things for you. The site stresses that patience, hard work, and a long term mentality are part of the deal if you want to be a successful investor. It’s a challenging game to play, but tickrz uses a disciplined and academic approach to prepare you.
So far advisors, portfolio managers, and novice investors have been taking advantage of the tickrz site with very positive reception.
Love at first sight in the library
We can’t tell whether to make fun or or empathize with Ronald, because he reminds us so much of ourselves. For Ronald, high school seemed like a natural time to start simultaneously coding and investing. At the time he had no idea that the fintech revolution would make this combination of skills dangerously sexy.
“While in class I’d sit at the back with boxes full of company annual reports, pouring over them, trying to learn. I didn’t know half of the accounting terms but for some reason I was mesmerized. I read every book out there about Warren Buffett and other famous investors. At lunch I’d eat in the library so I could read the financial newspapers. It was my calling.”
Ronald didn’t make a lot of friends in high school, but he got wicked smart and picked up a powerful tool box of skills. He even met his future wife in that library.
Tell us about the tickrz team!
Like most good ideas, tickrz was dreamed up over food. Ronald was having lunch with a good friend Aaron Grande.
The topic of discussion? The downturn of financial media.
The solution? A site like tickrz to help simplify investing with a straightforward attitude.
Aaron spearheaded the development of the platform as well as marketing strategies, and together the two make a winning team.
“After we came up with the rough idea for the site the next step was to source the data. I have used nearly every major platform including Bloomberg and Factset but those are very expensive. I trialed many of the next gen/’New Data’ options, including Intrinio. I chose Intrinio mainly because of the quality of the Excel plug in. Customer service has been fantastic. The pricing plan is great for starts ups like tickrz.”
So what’s next for Ronald?
For now Ronald has his hands full raising the kids with his wife – and they have boxes of annual reports to catch up on. Ronald and Aaron are still working to improve the tickrz platform and add new features. You can contact them with your input or ideas by clicking the link below.
